Civic Trust AwardsOver 50 projects from the UK, Ireland and Europe have been recognised by the prestigious Civic Trust Awards at a glittering ceremony held at St George’s Hall in Liverpool. The Awards were presented to the best new buildings, public spaces, restorations and public art by Civic Trust Awards Patron, architect and TV presenter George Clarke.
The 2010 Civic Trust Awards attracted over 330 entries and winning projects demonstrating excellence in design whilst offering a cultural, social or economic benefit to the local community.
Civic Trust Awards Managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said “we were delighted to see such a diverse range of projects submitted for consideration. The Civic Trust Awards celebrate not only design excellence, but also the relationship between structures, places, the environment and local communities. This year’s group of winners successfully illustrate how this relationship can produce effective and imaginative solutions.“
Award winners include The Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art at the Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, the restoration of Saint Malachy’s Church in Belfast, the Creative Arts Units at Aberystwyth University and a new winery facility for Bodegas Protos in northern Spain.
St Martin-in-the-Fields picked up the ‘Michel Middleton Special Award’, a memorial to the former Civic Trust Director presented to a restoration project or new build within a conservation area.
Landmark sculpture Dream, sited on a former colliery in St Helens received the ‘Special Award for Community Engagement’ and The Hull Truck Theatre was awarded the ‘Special Award for Inclusive Design’ sponsored by Bristan .
The ‘Special Award for East Midlands’, supported by East Midlands Development Agency (emda) was given to the John Lewis Department Store in Leicester and the ‘Special Award for Scotland’ (sponsored by The City of Edinburgh Council, Glasgow City Council and Falkirk Council) was presented to Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh.
The ‘Special Award for Restoration’ was given to The Midland Hotel in Morecambe and the Civic Trust Awards National Panel selected the Paradise Street Pedestrian Bridge in Liverpool as their favourite Award winner of 2010. Liverpool One Masterplan also picked up the ‘Special Award for Sustainability’.
From buildings to bridges; cafés to churches; housing to hospitals; public realm to public art; the next entry round for the Civic Trust Awards will be open to receive applications on 5th July 2010. Entries are invited from UK and Ireland in addition to suitable international projects completed by UK based architects, designers and engineers.
