Civic Trust AwardsThe Civic Trust Awards is pleased to announce that the 2010 Special Award for Scotland will be sponsored by three Local Authorities - The City of Edinburgh Council, Glasgow City Council and Falkirk Council.
The partnership approach adopted by these three Authorities has set a benchmark for the Awards and will help to promote some of the excellent projects being designed and completed in Scotland.
Successful entries from any region of Scotland will be short-listed for the Special Award and the winner will selected by the Civic Trust Awards National Panel to ensure impartiality. The winning project will also receive global recognition with the Awards scheme expanding its remit this year, receiving international entries from the USA, Bangkok and Spain.
Last Years winner of the Special Award for Scotland was the Titan Crane in Clydebank by Collective Architecture. Rising 150 feet above ground level, the Titan Crane is a prominent and recognisable landmark. Originally designed by Sir William Arrol, it is an outstanding symbol of Scotland’s engineering prowess and industrial heritage.
The scheme has proved hugely successful with residents, tourists, local clubs and schools. It is also a powerful emblem of the regeneration of the area, standing above the new urban quarter which is being developed. The scheme offers an opportunity for people to engage with their heritage on a new level.
Civic Trust Awards Managing Director, Malcolm Hankey said “We are delighted that three Scottish Authorities are sponsoring the Special Award in 2010. Knowing how popular the Award was last year, the competition between the Scottish entrants is sure to be just as strong. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Edinburgh, Glasgow and Falkirk Council’s for their support of the Civic Trust Awards, which is greatly appreciated.”
From the 335 entries received this year, 45 have been submitted from Scotland and judging will take place throughout October and November. The shortlist of winners will be published in January and the national Awards announcement will take place in March 2010.
