Streets Award

Streets are the most common and most heavily used of our public spaces. Our streets are the foreground to our built environment and the backdrop to our civic life. Well designed streets can contribute to social, economic and environmental sustainability. The Streets Award has been developed in association with CABE Space, who are our sponsors.

The five principles of transformational streets, which should be considered in nominating for this award are:
1. Vision: Streets need a strong physical and organizational vision. To deliver consistently great streets problems need to be solved within the framework of a strong physical vision. To sustain great streets local authorities need to adapt structures and service delivery to ensure coordinated delivery and long-term maintenance.
2. Commitment:  Streets need a commitment to long delivery timescales and to management and maintenance after delivery.
3. Integration: All kinds of people and the various ways of traveling need to be accommodate in our streets segregation. Connected street networks help people to chose how to travel.
4. Adaptation: Our streets need to take account of climate and culture change in order to be sustainable spaces that are fit for purpose in the 21st century.
5. Coherence: We need to deliver well conceived projects where the multitude of organisational political and technical issues are resolved into a well resolved design solution.
We would also like to underline the importance of the point on integration/access issues. The input of the Access Advisor is crucial so that the National Panel have the best understanding possible of the issues identified locally.

The current holder of the Streets Award is The Gold Route
