E1 PlacesAn outstanding example of partnership working, this scheme has saved and developed a superb Grade I listed building and surrounding estate, whilst delivering unique benefits to the local community. The site contains 26 listed estate buildings, monuments and follies spread over 600 acres of land. Home to the Northern College for Residential Adult Education, the Castle was previously in divided ownership and was in a state of neglect. Following considerable local concern, the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Trust was established to restore the estate, and work with the local community to develop the potential of the site. Having raised ?15.2 million, the Trust and its local partners (ranging from local people to Government organisations) have led a truly outstanding renovation and rejuvenation programme. The original Home Farm is now home to a fully accessible visitor centre, shop and function facility, whilst the old church provides an exhibition hall and community space. The remaining farm buildings now offer new facilities for the Northern College, including study bedrooms, gym and teaching spaces. The team has worked together to transform this site, employing and managing teams of professionals, and successfully meeting challenges, including the care of protected species. With the parkland now open to the public, this scheme highlights the achievements and results that can be gained through partnership working. Whilst an historical asset has been saved, it has also provided an updated, vibrant facility for local people and the public, undoubtedly saving it for the future.
