SIR ROBERT McALPINEPrimary Use Class:
D1c EducationA cleverly composed school for children from 3 to 19 with a range of disabilities, including visual and hearing impairments. The inclusive ethos of the school is embodied in the structure, interior design and fit-out. The scheme has been sensitively handled, and the architects have worked closely with the clients. Many of the existing trees on the site have been preserved, and the building curves around them in a central spine. This school sits attractively in the landscape and the design includes a successful series of small garden spaces. The internal curves of the building reduce the visual scale of the main circulation spaces and help to remove any institutional feel. Navigation throughout the building has been carefully considered, with a trail rail and vibrant colours and textures encouraging independence and freedom for the children.
