D2b Concert HallThis scheme has made a fantastic contribution to the public realm, bringing life and activity to the South Bank area. The reopening of this listed building marks a revival both for the fabric of the building and its position at the centre of London life. Offices have been removed from the hall itself to reinstate the original clarity of the foyers, whilst retail units and cafes have been taken from the foyer into specially constructed units under the Royal Festival Hall terrace. These add to the safe and secure feeling of the area. Queens Walk has been transformed into a highly successful animated public promenade, which is now used during both day and night. A safe and welcoming space, the scheme has made a dramatic impact upon the area, with the new bridge leading people from the Embankment and increasing the flow and number of people using the South Bank. The re landscaped paving, combined with the new retail units and cafes, which spill over the terraces, has created a vibrant public realm around the building. The scheme has reshaped the entire environment surrounding the Royal Festival Hall, and has been critical to the renaissance of London’s South Bank, providing a world class public space.
