D1a Medical/health serviceThis scheme provides one of the most advanced veterinary and teaching hospitals in the country. Sited in a rural location amongst a disparate group of buildings, the scheme is given structure by the use of an "organising wall". The 100m long wall is attractively faced in local sandstone and screens the variety of accommodation required by the scheme. It provides a simple, attractive and dramatic backdrop to an area of new hard and soft landscaping. The influence of the curved wall is felt inside the building which is arranged around two curved corridors. Generous roof lights allow daylight into deep plan areas and dispel any institutional feel. This scheme is attractively finished and functionally successful. It succeeds in bringing order to an otherwise disparate campus, and is a pleasing environment in which to work and learn.
