E Public RealmOne of the oldest public squares in the UK, Nottingham's Old Market Square has been revitalized by this remodeling and regeneration scheme. The city centre area now provides an attractive, accessible and well designed public space for all. It provides direct routes which link the busy shopping area and cultural quarters to this landmark space. This new layout has brought significant improvements to the public realm; it is accessible, easier and more attractive to use as a venue for events. The previous low walls, steps and sunken areas were difficult to navigate and the remodeling now provides mostly level access around and across the square. Clever use of lighting has been introduced to encourage evening usage of the square, which is now safer and more welcoming at all times of day and night. Seating has been introduced on south facing terraces, and trees planted to form an attractive boulevard. Day to day use of the square has already increased, being particularly well used at lunchtimes and early evenings. Events have drawn local people into the square and concerts, markets and an ice rink have proved to be extremely successful. This is an ambitious scheme which has brought together specialists, local people and the local authority to deliver a successful and attractivel public space. This level of partnership working, commitment and collaboration is to be congratulated, especially on a scheme which has caused upheaval and disruption within a busy city.
