D1f Public Library/archive/visitor centreThe result of an international design competition, this scheme replaces existing facilities and includes conference facilities, café, shop and staff accommodation. The scheme is built in a conservation area, and sits unobtrusively in the landscape. The challenge of designing a naturally ventilated building that could respond to extremely high visitor loads was met by a passive ventilation system, combining opening windows and low-level vents, with high-level ventilation via parapets and roof cowls.
