D1c EducationNB. Do not use pic across the landscape; entrance pic is better. A new academy for 3 – 16 year olds which also provides religious and sporting facilities, and is open to the community outside school hours. Located in a difficult borough, the school is acting as a catalyst for community integration. A central street connects three different wings, with the communal dining hall and new church located at the entrance. Both spaces are used by the community, and the dining room in particular is well lit, colourful and open. Natural lighting is maximized with large areas of glazing to one wall in each room. Clustering space is provided by the courtyards, and overall spatial distribution and flexibility are good, providing a surprising sense of community for such a large building. This is an exciting, stimulating and yet functional scheme, which is a real achievement for a school.
