E Public RealmThis scheme has partially pedestrianised, resurfaced and redesigned two squares which form the approach to the town centre. The first designated conservation area in 1971, the area has been much improved by reducing the dominance of road traffic. Simply executed, the scheme bravely attempts to develop a shared surface and uses attractive materials. Local people were widely consulted before and during the development, and the uncluttered civic space and its public art are proving popular
