D1d Display of works of artLocated on the site of the original art exchange, this scheme provides an arts centre which is devoted to the promotion of black and Asian arts. The 4 storey building accommodates a gallery, workshop spaces, studios and rehearsal spaces. The scheme engages with the local community by placing a café at the entrance. A high quality design, the Exchange is a sophisticated and welcoming addition to an urban neighbourhood. The layout of the building has been well thought out and the double height gallery on the ground floor is particularly airy and visually exciting. Set in a Victorian neighbourhood, the building is distinguished by its wonderful black brick façade. Natural ventilation and light are provided by the quirky, different sized windows which offer unusual and intriguing views into the building.
