C1 Hotels & HostelsBuilt in the 1930’s, the Grade II* Listed building is widely regarded as the finest example of Art Deco hotel architecture in the UK and was a favourite haunt of icons like Coco Chanel, Wallace Simpson and Lawrence Olivier. Original architect, Oliver Hill, involved several artists in the hotel most notably Eric Gill, Eric Ravilious and Marion Dorn. Its heyday was a distant memory when the hotel finally closed in near ruin in 1998. The restoration and refurbishment of a building that was on the English Heritage ‘Buildings at Risk Register’ has been handled sensitively and with care, underscoring the building’s heritage without restoring to pastiche. The developers, architects and builders deserve the highest praise having managed to preserve the best of the hotels original features with great success whilst balancing with necessary intervention to make the hotel commercially viable. Accessibility issues have been functionally resolved as part of the design development allowing a previously inaccessible building to become inclusive for all users. The Midland Hotel will act as a catalyst for an area-wide regeneration of Morecambe over the coming years.
