D1c EducationA new building for St Luke’s Church of England primary school, previously located on a split site. The building accommodates a two form entry for 420 children plus a 30 place nursery and community facilities. The design places a strong emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency, with the completed building achieving “Excellent” in the BREEAM rating environmental assessment scheme, the first school in the country to do so. The level of community involvement in the design process is admirable and this led to a design which responds directly to and expresses the ethos and character of this impressive school. The elegant structure is well thought out and attractive, the roof overhangs and verandas provide an outdoors/indoors feel by sliding external doors which has had a major impact on the way in which the younger pupils learn.
