The Built Environment Network (BE-Net) Education Project is an on-line digital resource, comprising the archival content from the last five decades of Civic Trust Awards, accompanied by the findings from new reassessments of these past Award winners. In total the Civic Trust Awards have recognised over 6,500 succesful projects dating back to 1959.
What is the aim of the BE-Net Project?
The Civic Trust Awards is currently seeking funding to producing a unique resource which will educate people about the long term life of built environment schemes and provide a valuable resource for schools, universities, the built environment profession and the general public. It highlights the elements which have contributed to the success or failure of a scheme. It will provide a site and forum where visitors can learn about and discuss the physical, environmental, social and economic factors which have contributed to the perceived success or failure of a scheme.
Visitors are be encouraged to undertake their own modern-day assessments, and upload them to the Built Environment Network, allowing others to read about the continued success (or otherwise) of Award winning schemes from the last 51 years. This ongoing feedback from the people who use the buildings reflects the importance that the Civic Trust Awards place on the ability of Award winning schemes to be of benefit to their local community.
The Civic Trust Awards will use feedback from the BE-Net project to identify, highlight and promote the issues around creating successful, popular, accessible and well used public spaces and buildings.
Subject to funding availability, we plan to commence development of the BE-Net website in October/November 2011 and launch the fully searchable archive of past winning projects in early 2011.
