Information about this scheme

“If we’ve seen it before, it’s not for us” was the challenge set by the Trust’s design vision which emphasised innovation, child-centred identity and clinical best practice. Alder Hey Children’s Hospital is a place that is bright, playful, vibrant and full of life. The environment is interactive and engaging encouraging a sense of wellbeing and reassurance for patients and their families. The thoughtful and intelligent use of daylight, colour and integrated artwork has been designed as if through children’s eyes. Its hilly, undulating profile has made the new building instantly recognizable, even from a distance: a striking identity that stands in deliberate contrast to the typical idea of a hospital and the institutional nature of the existing Alder Hey which it replaced. Recognising the therapeutic value of nature, the three-finger plan form gives almost all rooms a view of the park and provides balcony ‘playdecks’ at the end of each ward that connect children with the outdoors.
