Information about this scheme

Command of the Oceans is a unique conservation and re-use project. It unlocks the potential of historic buildings at the dockyard allowing them to be used as 21st century visitor facilities and telling the story of the most complete dockyard of the age of sail. Works comprise the preservation, display and interpretation of ‘the ship beneath the floor’; the preservation of the Mast House and Mould Loft, the Mast Ponds and their related landscape; orientation of Chatham’s wider naval heritage, the creation of interpretation galleries; and the resolution of visitor hospitality services. The new entrance fills a gap between the Masthouse and Wheelwrights shop and completes the eighteenth century terrace of gables of varying pitches with panache. The infill is an elegant, simple and striking structure clad in black zinc, in stark contrast to the painted white timber boarding of its historic neighbours. Internally the construction of the hall is clear to see. Pale cross-laminated timber panels and a delicate array of laminated timber ties articulate the light and airy space. A large window at the end of the hall offers a clear view to the sights of the dockyard beyond. Detailing is robust, in the spirit of a battleship with joints, abutments and services all on clear view. Command of the Oceans has enabled The Historic Dockyard Chatham to be far more ambitious with the way it engages with families, local residents and non-visitors. It has created sustainable and long-term resources that help Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust to embed community engagement into their programming.
