Information about this scheme

The new Museum sits along the west edge of Tian Fu Square to form one complete edge of the most important public space in the Chengdu. Maximising its profile, it presents a façade of commensurate scale and proportion to embrace and address the huge scale of this new square and establishes a strong formal relationship to it by forming a simple enclosing rectilinear profile. Extending to over 70,000m2 of accommodation, the building includes an exhibition space for Natural History, History and Folk, and Chinese Shadow Play as well as a large area for temporary exhibition. New undercover outdoor space has been provided - a monumental opening through the building offers a large covered outdoor space where people can gather, cultural events can take place and market stalls can extend beyond the surrounding streets.
