Information about this scheme

Greenwich Housing is new public housing project for elderly and disabled people, comprising 22 single storey houses built across six sites in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The scheme marries public housing with exceptional design standards, providing much-needed homes for social rent suitable for people over 60 on small redundant sites. The project has assisted the borough in accommodating population growth and demographic change in an unobtrusive and cost-effective way, allowing residents to retain comfortable and independent lifestyles. From the outset consultation took place with the Borough, the Councillors for the site, local residents and potential occupiers. The dwellings were to meet or exceed the standards set out in the London Housing Design Guide, Greenwich Wheelchair Design Guide and Lifetime Homes. As a consequence these prototype dwellings are generous in both plan and section, flooded with natural light, circulation is largely eliminated - incorporated into the living spaces, this is a paradigm shift in the design of the bungalow. The Greenwich Housing offers a very positive civic contribution at every level. Disused pieces of land are being put to excellent use, much needed housing is being provided without the need to re-invent the wheel every time, the housing is to an excellent standard - both functionally and visually and vibrant new communities are coming together and bringing benefit to the local community at many different levels.
