Information about this scheme

The City Council’s requirement was for a 70m foot and cycle bridge that had to be of high architectural quality but would also need to be tightly integrated with the construction of a new flood control weir it stands upon. The team approach was to create a unique concept that would be identifiable with Knostrop but also anticipating aspects of construction in order that the design be realised within a limited budget and programme. As a contractor-led piece of design, there was early access to fabricators with a focus on solutions through team collaboration. The project is a crossover point between two major projects in Leeds, the flood alleviation scheme whist the river link reinstates part of the Trans Pennine Trail. As such, special attention had to be made to the landscape assessments and requirements of the aforementioned schemes. The superstructure of the bridge is constructed using painted weathering steel with stainless steel parapets.  This was all pre-fabricated 17miles from site in 20m sections before being delivered and installed over the weir. Accessible for all users, the bridge is an important part of the newly upgraded route between Leeds City Centre and its Southside area.  The bridge’s unique form compliments its river context and is immediately identifiable as being part of the Knostrop area. Look-out points from the bridge create a new destination from which to enjoy the river. As part of the wider Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme the bridge has become a visible representation of the project. A modern architectural design able to reflect the cutting-edge technology of the hydraulic weirs that will protect the City.
