Laidlaw Music Centre, University of St Andrews
Fife, Scotland
Civic Trust Awards Citation
The Laidlaw Music Centre is the first dedicated music building in the University of St Andrews 600-year history and has become a cultural hub, fostering a thriving musical culture within the community.
The Music Centre stands out for its thoughtful design, acknowledging the historic context of the Central St Andrews Conservation Area. The building's height adheres to neighbouring listed structures, and the choice of sandstone reflects the area's architectural heritage. Despite the constraints of the site, the building blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The incorporation of large specimen trees and the formation of a new quad area not only add aesthetic value but also contribute to a serene environment, enhancing the overall experience.
The layout of the Music Centre is characterized by coherent circulation routes and generous spaces, creating an inviting and collaborative atmosphere. The connection to nature is evident, with the interior benefiting from seasonal changes from the surrounding landscape. The ground floor music room, visible from the approach, sparks interest with displayed musical instruments, while the recital hall, with its innovative acoustic solutions and movable floor, establishes the Music Centre as a world-class facility.
Accessibility is not just a physical aspect but extends to inclusivity in the community. The Music Centre serves as a gathering place, attracting not only University students and staff but also around 800 community members. It has become a focal point for engagement, offering a diverse range of activities, including concerts, community orchestra participation, and high-tech recording space collaboration with Fife College. The positive civic contribution of the Music Centre is notable, replacing outdated structures with a high-quality building that respects the existing context. The strong relationship between the town and the University is strengthened by the Music Centre's inclusive approach, providing opportunities for everyone, regardless of their musical background, to engage with the facility.
Achieving BREEAM Excellent status demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, with passive measures integrated into the design. Laidlaw Music Centre is more than just a building; it is a cultural landmark that enriches the community by fostering musical creativity, accessibility, and inclusivity.
Judges’ Comments: “The Music Centre's positive civic contribution and inclusive programming, highlights its role as not just a building but a dynamic cultural hub enriching the lives of all who engage with its purpose-built spaces and diverse musical offerings.”
