Information about this scheme

Lightwoods House forms an ensemble group with the Shakespeare walled garden, bandstand and drinking fountains which together carry the additional significance as an example of a public park created by community action and public subscription. The buildings and structures had deteriorated through many years of neglect making them "at risk"; and the Park layout had been significantly altered from its original layout as 2 private estates. The project for Lightwoods House and Park required that they be regenerated to provide for new, viable uses, supported by a robust financial business plan, whilst at the same time restoring the original character features. The proposals for the restoration of the Grade II Listed Lightwoods House (including kitchen & former stables), Grade II Listed Bandstand & surrounding park, including significant features such as the walled Shakespeare Garden, drinking fountains & boundary walls, were successful in obtaining a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) & Big Lottery grant in July 2013. The project was informed by a wide ranging public consultation which confirmed local support for the proposals. For many years the local community have been campaigning to see Lightwoods House re-opened for community use. The restoration will enable use for the community whilst also offering a mix of local commercial use, particularly on the upper floor, to ensure the long term sustainability of the building.
