The restoration of No. 4 High Street has successfully preserved a rare example of seventeenth-century architecture in the heart of Chiddingstone.

Designated Grade II* in 1954, this building boasts a façade dating back to 1697, showcasing exquisite examples of ‘scraffito’ - a form of pargeting employing a scratch technique, reminiscent of Italian craftsmanship. The restoration project focused on preserving the historic fabric while enhancing the building’s aesthetic appeal within its historic context. The façade, adorned with decorative details such as scallop motifs, inverted hearts, and button designs, had fallen into disrepair, obscured by a non-breathable polymer-based paint coating. This coating not only hindered moisture escape but also concealed the intricate scraffito detailing, contributing to decay and deterioration. The team embarked on a comprehensive process to uncover and revive the façade’s original splendour. Through meticulous analysis and research, including lab tests and consultation with archaeological experts, they gained insight into the building’s construction and historical significance. 2D and 3D photogrammetry techniques were employed to document existing detailing, providing a precise record of the façade ‘s condition before restoration commenced. This data guided the process, enabling targeted repairs and enhancements to be made.

The removal of the polymer paint coating posed a significant challenge, requiring careful consideration of materials and techniques to avoid further damage to the underlying fabric. Plastic spatulas were chosen for their gentle touch, minimising impact on the façade ‘s structure. High-temperature ThermaTech cleaning was employed to effectively remove the paint while preserving the lime undercoat intact. Repairs to the façade were carried out using traditional craft skills, with meticulous attention to detail. Missing scallops and other decorative elements were recreated using lime putty and carefully applied to match the original design. Consolidation of loose historic fabric was achieved using lime wash and haired brushes, ensuring compatibility with the building’s materials. One notable aspect involved deciphering the significance of symbols and motifs adorning the façade. Through close observation and consultation with experts, the team uncovered possible connections to the building’s past owners and local history. The restoration of the missing plaque above the doorway, believed to bear the initials A W, was informed by historical research and onsite measurements, culminating in the accurate replication of the motif using lime putty techniques.

Throughout the process, meticulous care was taken to protect the building and its surroundings. Scaffold erection adhered to National Trust standards, with buffers and padding used to safeguard the façade from damage. Ground coverings and planting were employed to minimise environmental impact, ensuring the preservation of this architectural gem for future generations to enjoy. The project represents a harmonious blend of preservation and enhancement, breathing new life into a rare example of seventeenth-century architecture. Through meticulous research, skilled craftsmanship, and careful conservation techniques, the building’s historic façade has been revived, ensuring its continued presence as a cherished landmark in the heart of Chiddingstone.
