Information about this scheme

Rockvilla brings together various departments of the National Theatre of Scotland under one roof. This redevelopment of a disused industrial warehouse on the banks of the Forth & Clyde Canal, reinvigorating a part of Glasgow that is fast becoming a cultural quarter, provides: three rehearsal rooms of varying scales, learning and community suite, wardrobe department, production workshop and technical store; plus office space and social areas. The building is clad in sinusoidal metal, maintaining an industrial aesthetic in keeping with the history of the site and the vision of a ‘creative factory’. The building has a strong and open relationship with the public realm of the canal towpath. It has turned a disused building in an area of many social challenges into a vibrant centre for theatre production. With no boundaries between the building and the public realm and foot path, the building is illuminated in the evening adding to a sense of security and wellbeing. Theatre groups at local and national level are allowed to use the facility and Rockvilla itself is the centre of their education and outreach work.
