Roundhouse Works

Camden, Greater London

Civic Trust Awards Citation

Roundhouse Works, specifically tailored for 18-30-year-olds, seamlessly integrates into the existing Roundhouses campus in Camden, contributing to the rich historical tapestry that includes the Grade II* listed Roundhouse.

Designed as a hub for creative talents, Roundhouse Works not only adds physical space but also provides an avenue for young individuals to immerse themselves in the creative community. Architecturally, the building’s massing is a stroke of brilliance, appearing as two-story elements delicately floating above the original railway wall. This design choice not only preserves views down Chalk Farm Road to the Roundhouse but also highlights the commitment of the Roundhouse Foundation to charitable work. Carefully positioned picture windows frame scenic views, creating a dynamic connection between the interior and the vibrant surroundings.

The internal spatial sequence is well-crafted, offering a diverse range of functional spaces. From the large open plan coworking space facing Chalk Farm Road to multipurpose halls and studios for various creative endeavours, the design allows for flexibility and adaptability. Multi-functional spaces are enhanced with clever cabinetry, facilitating transformations for different uses, and fostering a sense of community. Internally, the exposed timber frame, timber wall panelling, and heracoustic ceilings contribute to a calming atmosphere. The emphasis on natural light further enhances the overall sense of well-being, providing a counterpoint to the energetic atmosphere of Camden.

External materials, referencing the industrial history of the site, include recycled railway sleepers and lightweight profiled metal, skilfully detailed to create a visual and tactile contrast. A fundamental aspect of the design brief was sustainability, and Roundhouse Works excels in this regard. Achieving BREEAM Excellent certification, the building minimises embodied and operational carbon. A prefabricated CLT frame, exposed to negate the need for internal finishes, and a highly performing thermal envelope contribute to the sustainable design. Inclusivity and accessibility were key considerations in the design process. A comprehensive accessibility strategy, developed through consultation with various stakeholders, ensures level access throughout the building.

The provision of accessible toilets on all floors, along with a Space for Change, aligns with a commitment to serving individuals of diverse abilities. Roundhouse Works goes beyond being a physical space; it symbolises a commitment to community impact. By extending its age offer, doubling the number of young people engaged annually, and addressing the cost-of-living crisis, Roundhouse Works acts as a catalyst for positive change in the lives of young creatives.

This architectural marvel not only reflects the vibrancy of Camden but also exemplifies how thoughtful design can foster sustainability, inclusion, and community engagement.
