Civic Trust Awards Citation
The Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings heritage regeneration project for Historic England, has successfully transformed these historic buildings into a vibrant, adaptable workspace and social enterprise hub.
The works of restoration and adaptation have used robust local materials, with access improved to allow for the buildings to be safely and efficiently maintained in the future. These design elements showcase a meticulous approach to restoration, emphasising sustainability and innovation while preserving the essence of the original structure. The restoration process addressed significant structural challenges, such as the compromised iron frame and settlement-induced cracks. Ingenious engineering solutions, including strengthening the masonry around the existing iron, allowed the retention of the original frame’s integrity showcasing a commitment to preserving the historical significance of the Grade I and II Listed industrial buildings. In addition, a heritage skills program conducted during the development phase utilised the site as a learning tool.
Accessibility was a key consideration in the project, with alterations to external landscaping and internal floor levels ensuring level access throughout public areas on the ground floor. The inclusion of lifts, induction loops, tactile models, and wide corridors further enhanced accessibility, creating an inclusive space for all. Following extensive community engagement throughout, the project has become a hub for the community, creating jobs and opportunities for all generations, with the incorporation of a public café, flexible office spaces, and learning areas that consider the diverse needs of the community and has initiated wider area regeneration, reducing crime figures and boosting the local economy. A sustainable travel plan was introduced with features like a new park and ride bus-stop, electric vehicle charging, and an extended cycle network.
The success of Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings lies not only in the transformation of the historic buildings but also in its positive impact on the overall regeneration of the surrounding area. The project exemplifies how historic buildings can be sustainably repurposed, contributing to the cultural and economic enrichment of the community for the next 100 years.
Judges’ Comments: “An excellent remodelling of a valuable heritage asset, with a great deal of care, skill and dedication evident throughout.”
