Information about this scheme

This major new campus development for the University of Southampton creates a world-leading hub for innovation, business and education. The site unites the University of Southampton and Lloyd’s Register in a unique collaboration focusing on marine engineering and engineering sciences. The redeveloped campus on the university's 4.3 hectare Boldrewood site is set within an established arboretum - a landmark site on a key approach to Southampton. The creation of a new public facing quad at the centre of the campus creates an additional piece of significant public realm, the design of which allows views into the university laboratory facilities from the central lawn and also housing several pieces of public art. The refined and understated buildings benefit from shared material palettes which include Jura limestone, used principally around podium elements, zinc cassette panels, terracotta baguettes, anodised aluminium, glass and cedar boarding. These are buildings that derive their character from crisp and simple detailing, with carefully considered internal and external environmental design promoting access for all. The new Innovation Campus has established links between industry and academia, enabling sharing of expertise with world-class research activities.
