Information about this scheme

Founded by Annie Mawson in 1992, Sunbeams Music Trust brings the ‘healing power of music’ to people of all ages with disabilities. Sunbeams is now one of the leading Arts in Health organisations in the UK and recognised as one of the most innovative, high-achieving “hands-on” charities in the country. Sunbeams tackle the serious challenges raised by social exclusion, deprivation, ill-health and inequality through the transformative power of music. After having an initial commitment of public funding, which was later withdrawn prior to tender following the dissolution of the NWDA, a mammoth fund raising exercise began for the facility over a number of years. A key understanding in creating the resultant design was the use of natural materials in union with the site and a form which gave maximum outlook to the important surroundings while also providing insular private acoustically driven forms in which the therapy is delivered. This approach was formed on the understanding of Steiner Theories which are important in holistic therapies. Architecturally, the centre reflects synthesis between the natural context, a contemporary vernacular and musical union; housing several unique functions it is also importantly an outward facing advert for the charity. The structural geometry has a main curved aspect which is formed in twin glulam sections sat onto a vertical beam within an oak clad elevation to the south. The projecting eaves have a larch lining which continues internally to draw the eye; connecting inside and out.
