Information about this scheme

Founded in 1889, the Whitworth, part of the University of Manchester, is a public art gallery within Whitworth Park. With a growing national and international profile, a growing audience and collection and an ambitious exhibitions and educational programme, the gallery found a need to expand. The project comprised an extension to and development of the grade II listed Beaumont gallery with the new extension encapsulating the previously unresolved west end of the original building, creating a new frontage to the park. Two new wings of contrasting character contain an open garden art court and new park entrance. A new public sculpture terrace of generous scale has been created at the front of the building providing more gracious, step-free access. Expending on the original brief, a reorganisation of the whole building has seen the relocating of the collection stores, the café and lecture facilities improved, rationalising the back-of-house facilities and providing a new loading dock, art transit facilities, quarantine and goods lift. The extension has not only added to the gallery’s floor area but also acted as a ‘pressure release valve’, unlocking the potential of the existing building and facilitating the recovery of some of the best spaces of Beaumont’s original design including the Grand hall and the Exhibition Galleries. The Whitworth now embraces the park with improved access and public amenity. Whilst the building has been expanded by one third, the publically accessible space has almost doubled. With its outlook over the park and animation of formerly neglected areas, the redevelopment has contributed to creating a safe public space.
