Information about this scheme

The Charterhouse is a Grade 1 listed historic complex in the centre of London arranged around a 14th century Carthusian monastery.  In partnership with the Museum of London, it has opened up part of its historic site to the public.  The ‘Revealing the Charterhouse’ project provides access to a hidden treasure whose built fabric has witnessed key moments in the history of England.  It was occupied by the Tudors, changed to an almshouse and school by the Jacobeans and restored extensively following bombing in WW2.  Today it remains an almshouse, after over 400 years of continuous occupation, for elderly gentlemen known as Brothers. The ‘Revealing the Charterhouse’ project has opened-up part of this historic complex to the public by: Renewing and improving the gardens of Charterhouse Square. Creating a new visitor’s entrance and garden with associated interpretation in Chapel Court, which is separate to the Brothers’ entrance. Providing purpose built museum and learning facilities within the shell of part of the existing building. Curating an accessible route through the wider complex for tour groups.
