Information about this scheme

The Garden Museum is housed in a deconsecrated church on the banks of the Thames in Lambeth. This project makes a new public gallery inside the church, and extends into the churchyard as three bronze-clad pavilions connected by a glazed cloister. The new pavilions provide education and community facilities focused on a new landscape. The relationship between the precision of the new architecture and the patina of the old building, combined with the colour and texture of the landscaping, creates a juxtaposition that defines the character of the museum. This is a very successful demonstration of the rebirth of a lost part of London’s heritage. It is a fine example of an architect and client working together to achieve this regeneration without resorting to an over design. Detailing is finely honed and the selection of materials exemplary. The new material is incorporated with the existing, often overlaying it, like a palimpsest, showing traces of what was there before. The marriage of the museum and the garden is carefully controlled with the garden being dominant; a fitting typology, which acts as the centrepiece for the Museum.
