Information about this scheme

The King’s School, which was founded in 597AD, has provided 53 new boarding places for girls, strengthening the school’s co-educational offering and was achieved in two phases: refurbishing a Grade II listed former primary school and Master’s House, designed by William Butterfield in 1846; then adding an elegant, contemporary new building that looked like it belonged in its historic neighbourhood. Accommodation includes study bedrooms, common room, quiet study area, kitchen and ‘brew’ areas, and residences for houseparents and matrons. Newly landscaped areas between the buildings offer spaces for study and socialising, with views towards the Cathedral and City Wall. The resulting scheme is a welcome well executed addition to the architectural scene in Canterbury and successfully improves the links between school buildings, making navigation through the site easier, and at the same time, a pleasurable experience.
