Information about this scheme

The small inner city site necessitated a 3 floor building, designed to provide specialised care and education for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Two fire lifts, capacious refuges and a ramp wrapped around a central assembly space not only solved the problem of escape, but created a porous and open building where everyone can move around with ease. The School has been designed with inclusion in mind from the formation of the brief, through design development, to construction and occupation. Listening to the school’s needs was key, so to facilitate this and in addition to the extensive consultation carried out with individual groups of staff, governors and stakeholders, a number of whole school consultations were held during the design process.  From this collaboration, an excellent piece of civic architecture has emerged that is a testimony to the architects’ ability to listen and translate this into a reality. So much thought has been put into signage, lighting, surfaces, outdoor spaces, the approach to the building and much, much more.
