Information about this scheme

This scheme, delivering a playground, café, community spaces and park facilities, has quickly become the focal point of the north of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Designed and built in accordance with the LLDC’s Inclusive Design Strategy and Standards, it builds on those developed by the ODA for the 2012 Games and is an exemplar in accessibility and universal design. The distinctive single storey building is easily recognisable and fully accessible with flush thresholds to all external and internal doors which are clearly visible when approaching the building and are power assisted. The Sand and Water area forms a natural focus of play for a wide range of age groups close to the Timber Lodge café.  This area is particularly accessible for wheelchair users and people with mobility impairment. The Succession Garden is an attractive element where children can explore the different plant groups, their colours, smells, sounds, scale and varying forms.  It provides rich play value giving children a sense of time and the changing of the seasons.  The Scots Pine Play area incorporates a gently inclined pathway offering access to the valley underneath a climbing net and bridge which features a series of suspended rubber swings and sensory play in the form of musical instruments. Artworks and artist-led activities were integrated into the design process creating opportunities for participation in the arts and skills development, as well as expanding experiences and understanding of what is local and particular.
