Information about this scheme

The scheme is the repair of the chancel, nave and south porch roofs of the grade I listed Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Warminghurst, West Sussex for The Churches Conservation Trust. The project involved the repair of the chancel, nave and south porch roof structures, renew the Horsham stone slate and clay plain tile roof coverings and repair the chancel barrel vaulted ceiling lath and lime plasterwork.  The design approach was to retain and secure as far as possible the existing historic fabric and reuse the roof coverings, in particular the Horsham stone slates as no new slates are available at present.  Any other new materials were to be chosen to match the existing historic ones. The repairs were required because the Horsham stone and tile roof coverings were no longer wind and watertight. The roof repairs show the depth of care and skills needed to conserve this historic church so that it may continue in sustainable use into the future. The church is highly significant for its architectural interest and the great value it has for The Friends of Warminghurst Church and the wider community. During the repair works, several visits to the church, including on the scaffolding at roof level, were arranged for the Friends and also for the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings as part of their historic buildings education programmes.  The Friends visits were helpful in particular in raising awareness of the urgent need to raise additional funding for the roof timber repairs during construction.
