Selwyn Goldsmith Awards Citation

The project at Wraxall Yard exemplifies a commitment to Universal Design and a pursuit of high accessibility standards, driven by a profound understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities.

The client’s personal experience became the catalyst for a not-for-profit Community Interest Company that prioritises both practicality and aesthetics in accessible accommodations. Incorporating Universal Design principles, the project accommodates diverse needs without compromising elegance. Approximately 60% of bookings have been from families with a disabled member, showcasing the project’s resonance with its target audience. The collaboration with the Green Island Holiday Trust has further allowed the facility to host supported holidays for local individuals with disabilities. Navigating the constraints of the existing buildings, budget, and business model, the project aimed for Part M Category 3 wheelchair-user dwellings. Although fully compliant kitchens were not viable within the specified constraints, the design team, in consultation with disabled individuals and the Centre for Accessible Environments, made informed decisions. The kitchens feature height-adjustable rise-and-fall worktops with wheelchair clearance, prioritising functionality within the context of short-term holiday lets.

Accessibility extends beyond functional considerations to include thoughtful design elements. All parking spaces and cottages are wheelchair accessible, eliminating the need for separate entrances or special routes. The layout ensures easy circulation with generous turning circles, while carefully specified bathrooms integrate features such as sinks with integrated handles to reduce visual clutter. Bedrooms are equipped with height-adjustable and profiling beds, demonstrating a commitment to personalised comfort. Hoisted access to en-suite bathrooms and provisions for potential additional hoist tracks showcase forward-thinking design. The attention to detail extends to accessible switches, handles, and contrasting door handles for increased visibility. The Community Space bathroom’s potential retrofit as a Changing Places toilet, with specialised equipment and space for two carers, reflects a commitment to inclusivity for day visitors lacking bedroom privacy. The renovated Dutch Barn introduces farm animal interactions with Wraxall Yard staff support, enhancing the overall experience for all visitors.

The Wraxall Yard project sets a benchmark for inclusive design, acknowledging the nuanced needs of individuals with disabilities.
