Brent Cross Town Substation
Barnet, Greater London
Civic Trust Awards Citation
The Brent Cross South substation challenges the conventional perception of utilitarian infrastructure by transforming a functional necessity into an exuberant piece of public art.
This vibrant substation, positioned in a prominent location, not only serves as a vital part of the Brent Cross Town regeneration project but also stands as the largest permanent public artwork in the UK. The innovative design, characterised by its kaleidoscopic visual effect and uplifting messaging, turns a mundane structure into an inspirational beacon for the community. Situated at an intersection near the North Circular Road, M1 motorway, and Thameslink railway, the substation is strategically placed to be seen by approximately 6 million people annually.
The colourful wrap, designed to be viewed in motion, creates a dynamic visual experience, emphasising the sense of movement and energy. The motivational statement, “Here we come, Here we rise and shine,” reflects the project’s ambition to inspire and unite the surrounding community as it heralds the arrival of Brent Cross Town. This transformative approach extends beyond aesthetics, incorporating sustainability into the core of the design and is a physical expression of Agent’s commitment to the new town achieving net zero carbon by 2030 when it will supply 100% renewable electricity to homes, offices and business. This commitment is evident in both the operational and embodied energy considerations. Circular economy principles are embraced, with salvaged oil pipeline steel used for primary structural columns, significantly reducing the embodied carbon of the steel frame. The use of low cement concrete and Earth Friendly Concrete, a cement-free alternative, further contributes to minimising environmental impact. The substation’s design takes advantage of natural ventilation, reducing operational emissions, while the brownfield site’s embankment is rewilded with a wildflower meadow and trees to enhance biodiversity. This integration of sustainable practices aligns with the broader goal of creating environmentally responsible urban spaces.
Beyond its functional role in supplying electricity to the new Brent Cross Town development, the substation becomes a symbol of regeneration and positive change. Rising to 21 meters at its tallest, the structure asserts itself among the surrounding concrete infrastructure, providing a welcome burst of colour and form. The undulating horizontal bands of the wrap, expanding and compressing, convey a sense of kinetic energy that complements the dynamism of the surrounding transport routes. The substation’s impact extends to the night-time, where a well integrated lighting scheme accentuates its dramatic form. Careful consultation with transportation authorities ensured that potential issues of glare and distraction were addressed.
Brent Cross Town Substation is a testament to the transformative power of architecture and design, combining functionality, sustainability, and public art.
Judges’ Comments: “This innovative approach not only fulfils its essential role in the urban infrastructure, but also contributes to the visual and cultural identity of Brent Cross Town. It leaves a positive imprint on the community and the six million individuals who witness its vibrant presence each year.”
