Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre

Brighton and Hove, South East

A stunning example of how historical buildings can be transformed to serve modern audiences while respecting their cultural heritage. Situated in the heart of the city’s Regency gardens and adjacent to the Royal Pavilion, this ambitious project has successfully rejuvenated these iconic venues into a vibrant cultural hub for both locals and visitors alike. One of the standout features of the project is the sensitive restoration of the Corn Exchange, a pioneering column-free timber structure that dates to the early 19th century. The meticulous conservation work has uncovered and preserved hidden architectural treasures, including the arched timber frame, which is now proudly displayed. The restoration process also revealed sculpted west-facing windows, which now allow natural daylight to flood the building, creating a connection between the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre. A new link building has been introduced, seamlessly connecting the two venues while offering a dynamic public foyer that includes a bar, gallery space, and restaurant opening onto a pedestrianised street. This architectural innovation has not only improved the visual and physical connectivity between the venues but also activated the surrounding public space, enhancing the visitor experience. With a focus on improving energy efficiency without compromising the buildings' historic integrity, thermal performance has been enhanced through the installation of modern ventilation systems that incorporate heat-recovery technology, helping to reduce operational carbon and running costs. A new link building provides level access across varying floor levels, while new lifts enable easy movement between floors. Significant improvements have been made to seating, with the number of wheelchair spaces expanded and dedicated companion seating introduced. Notably, the Studio Theatre, previously restricted by its design, now offers more flexible seating configurations, including a new balcony, increasing its capacity for a wider range of performances. For performers and technical staff, the introduction of motorised trusses in both Theatres reduce the need for high-level access equipment. Beyond its architectural and technical upgrades, the refurbishment of the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre has had a profound impact on Brighton’s cultural scene, becoming a focal point of the city’s vibrant cultural quarter. The new public foyers, linked by a spacious, top-lit area, invite visitors to explore the rich history of these iconic venues. The introduction of Anita’s Room, a new creative space for workshops and rehearsals, provides local artists and community groups with a much-needed resource within the city.
