Civic Trust Awards Citation

The Sheerness Dockyard Church, once gutted by fire in 2001, has undergone a remarkable transformation, reemerging as a Grade II* listed architectural gem and a vital community hub on the Isle of Sheppey.

The restoration, guided by a commitment to historical integrity and thoughtful design, has not only resurrected the church but has become a beacon of hope for the regeneration of Sheerness. Externally, the C19th church has been faithfully restored to its original design, showcasing meticulous detailing that adds an exquisite touch to the robust elegance of the architecture. The interior seamlessly blends surviving original features with contemporary interventions, creating a space that exudes light and openness. The restoration decisions include the reinstatement of lost historic detailing and the retention of scars from past fires. By applying a fine shelter coat of lime wash all these past wounds are unified, adding to the building's elegant lightness while contributing to the architectural integrity.

The layout, dictated by the form of the original building, accommodates a coworking space, a café, public exhibition areas, and an events space. The design prioritizes maintaining a free and open space, evident in clear spans of glazed walls that allow natural light to permeate the building. The quality of the build, driven by immense pride from each trade involved, is evident throughout. Advantage has been taken to install led lighting throughout, and underfloor heating has been installed in the newly laid polished concrete floor. Where possible, materials have been sourced and, in some cases, manufactured locally.

The church, strategically positioned as a landmark aligned with the town's High Street, symbolizes pride in the heritage of Sheerness and serves as a reminder of the town's historical stature. The community impact of the Sheerness Dockyard Church restoration is profound. Local involvement in the Trust and public interest during consultation and construction phases have fostered a strong bond among the community. The inclusive nature of the space has engendered renewed pride and hope for the town's future. The Trust envisions the church as a venue for events open to all, with the inclusion of the C18th model of the Dockyard adding a layer of historical interest.

Judges’ Comments: “As a cultural heritage asset, the Sheerness Dockyard Church stands not only as a physical restoration but as a catalyst for community pride and engagement.”
