The Jackson Library
Oxford, South East
The Jackson Library project at Exeter College sensitively and skilfully enhances the Grade II Listed building while addressing key issues with highly considered interventions. It meets all its goals, delivering a cohesive and joyous experience for its users. At the heart of the project is a new, exquisitely crafted entrance, lobby, and lift that seamlessly connect the main library to the lower annex. The design thoughtfully embraces the building's heritage, with details like the Clipsham stone archway echoing George Gilbert Scott's original architecture, while the contemporary sliding timber door offers a discreet yet elegant contrast. The lift, clad in decorative cast iron plates inspired by the chapel's turret, harmonises functionality with heritage, ensuring accessibility across four levels without disrupting the building's historic character. The timber mezzanine reading balcony, though visually prominent, is meticulously detailed, providing additional study space while incorporating hidden pockets for storage and staff areas. The oak winding staircase, with its concealed fixings and impeccable finish, exemplifies the project's focus on craftsmanship. Hidden doors in the annex reading room, designed with brass-inset tracks, add an element of surprise and delight, blending practicality with elegance. Sustainability has been carefully integrated into the project, with improvements to environmental performance achieved without compromising the building's historic fabric. Measures such as natural ventilation, roof insulation, the restoration of rare sliding lead sashes and innovations like finned heating tubes discreetly slotted between bookcases further underscore the project's sustainable approach. While the library's primary use is for Exeter College students, its impact resonates beyond the immediate community. By enhancing the functionality and appeal of this historic gem, the project contributes to the enduring legacy of Exeter College and bolsters Oxford University's global reputation. The building’s quality and thoughtful design ensure it will continue to attract and inspire students from around the world.
