Leighton House
Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London
Civic Trust Awards Citation
The restoration and expansion of Leighton House, a Grade II* museum within the Holland Park Conservation Area, not only safeguards the museum’s historical integrity but also enhances its role as a vibrant cultural amenity for both the local community and the broader public.
The interventions and upgrade measures implemented in the project exhibit a finely judged approach, seamlessly blending new elements with the original features of the museum. A combination of fabric removal, refurbishment and addition was necessary to bring coherency that reinforce the character of the place and enable it to realise its potential as a vital cultural amenity. The relocation of the entrance proves to be a masterstroke, allowing visitors to be greeted by the stunning garden space upon arrival. Rediscovering historic ironwork columns during the creation of the new café/shop/foyer adds a layer of authenticity, providing a visual connection to its historical past. The visitors’ experience is carefully crafted to facilitate a smooth flow between old and new, creating an enjoyable and integrated journey. A platform lift, discreetly positioned in a timber-lined niche on the lower ground level, ensures accessibility without compromising dignity.
Detailing throughout the project is exceptionally well-resolved, adding a new layer of excitement and visual delight to this already distinguished Grade II* listed building. Leighton House, once relatively unknown to the general public, has seen a remarkable 100% increase in visitors since the opening of the new development. The introduction of public facilities, study rooms for schools, and direct access to the garden not only elevates the museum’s profile but also fosters a sense of delight and encouragement within the local neighbourhood.
The restoration and expansion of Leighton House stands as a shining example of how the meticulous blend of historical preservation, contemporary design, and community engagement can transform a Grade II* museum into a vibrant cultural hub.
Judges’ Comments: “This project not only preserves the museum’s historical integrity but also elevates its significance as a cherished amenity, underscoring the transformative power cultural institutions have in shaping and enriching the fabric of their communities.”
