New Century Hall

Manchester, North West

Civic Trust Awards Citation

The successful transformation of the renowned New Century Hall has revived this cultural landmark in Manchester.

Previously laying mostly vacant for years, the 1,000-capacity music venue has undergone a much-needed refurbishment as part of the NOMA development, breathing new life into the Grade II-listed structure. The renovation separated New Century Hall from the adjacent New Century House, allowing both to function autonomously. Key interventions were strategically implemented to open up the post-war, International Style architecture, preserving its aesthetics and cultural significance. The result is a seamlessly integrated space spanning three floors that houses a music venue, food hall, and creative college, each contributing to the vibrant community within NOMA.

The project demonstrates a commendable commitment to accessibility, breaking down barriers often associated with historic buildings. Lifts provide access to all floors, ensuring inclusivity for the public, performers, and technicians. The ground floor’s food and drink areas not only enliven Sadlers Yard but also serve as a focal point for community activity. The impact of the New Century redevelopment extends beyond its walls, contributing to the broader regeneration of NOMA. The project aligns with a vision that goes beyond mere restoration; it supports education through the inclusion of a music school and on-the-job learning opportunities. This approach reflects a forward-thinking strategy that marries heritage preservation with contemporary functionality. The civic impact of the scheme is immeasurable, creating a hub for cultural activities that resonates with the diverse communities of Manchester.

The success of New Century lies not only in its physical transformation but also in its role as a catalyst for creative reuse, serving the current society’s needs while preserving the building’s original spirit. The partnership’s ‘can-do’ attitude is highlighted as a driving force behind the project’s success. The community involved in the redevelopment saw beyond the challenges posed by a post-war building, embracing its history and repurposing it for a new era.

Judges’ Comments: “New Century Hall is a truly inclusive project, a beacon of creativity and adds to Manchester’s status as a great global city with a vibrant and civic cultural scene.”
