Melville, Royal William Yard (RWY)

Plymouth, South West

The restoration of the Melville Building within Royal William Yard (RWY), originally part of a 19th-century British Navy victualling facility, has been thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant mixed-use space that harmoniously blends historical significance with contemporary functionality. The building’s design celebrates its military-industrial heritage while incorporating modern interventions with sensitivity. The decision to retain imperfections, such as flaking paint on exposed cast iron, alongside carefully repaired elements, creates a dialogue between past and present. The building’s iconic clock tower stands as a centrepiece, reinforcing its historical identity. Internally, flexible floor plans cater to diverse tenants, with spaces that respect the original fabric, such as preserved timber doors and granite setts. A restrained material palette allows the building’s character to take centre stage, ensuring the grandeur of its architectural heritage remains intact. By repurposing the existing structure, the project achieves significant embodied carbon savings while minimising environmental impact. Energy-efficient upgrades, including high-efficiency lighting, natural ventilation, and preparation for Plymouth’s district heating network, enhance the building’s performance within the constraints of its historic status. The use of sustainable materials, such as lime plaster and recycled plastic flooring, further reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility. The restoration has made strides in improving public accessibility, with new walkways and entry points connecting the building to its central courtyard and surrounding areas. While the historic nature of the structure imposes some limitations on spatial adaptability, the design successfully balances accessibility with heritage preservation. The integration of mixed-use spaces, including a cinema, gym, café, and workspaces, creates a welcoming environment that encourages public interaction and community engagement. As part of the larger RWY development, the Melville Building contributes to a thriving destination that fosters economic growth and cultural vibrancy. Free events, markets, and festivals invite community participation, while the building’s diverse amenities support local businesses.
