Saltdean Lido
Brighton and Hove, South East
The conservation of the only Grade II* listed lido in the country stands as testament to the effectiveness of historic building conservation techniques and their profound benefits to the community and its users. This restoration project not only safeguards an important piece of Britain’s architectural heritage but also revitalises Saltdean Lido as a functional and thriving community hub. One of the most commendable aspects of this conservation effort is the meticulous attention to preserving the Lido’s Modernist character while ensuring its structural integrity. By retaining and repairing as much of the original fabric as possible, the project team demonstrated a commitment to authenticity. The careful assessment of the building’s condition allowed for targeted interventions, ensuring that repairs were conducted only where necessary. This approach is evident in the extensive concrete repairs, which involved both traditional and innovative techniques. The use of anodes beneath over-sprayed concrete and the application of specialist finishing coats effectively protected against further deterioration. The introduction of carbon-fibre strips to reinforce cantilevered terraces preserved the original slender aesthetic while ensuring structural soundness. The restoration also successfully balanced historical accuracy with modern compliance. The project team took great care in replicating key elements that were beyond repair, such as the timber Esavian doors and steel Crittall windows, maintaining the Lido’s unique 1930s charm. Meanwhile, new additions - such as recessed curtain walling and glazed terrace balustrading – have been designed to be distinguishable from the original fabric. Beyond the technical successes, the restoration of Saltdean Lido brings significant social, economic, and environmental benefits to the community. By reinstating original features like the pool’s single tank and cascade fountain, the Lido now offers an enhanced leisure experience that aligns with its historical purpose. The improved accessibility - through new lifts, ramps, and balustrade modifications - ensures that all members of the community can enjoy the facility. Furthermore, the integration of energy-efficient solutions, including insulation upgrades and double-glazed steel windows, secures the Lido’s sustainability for future generations. The conservation of Saltdean Lido exemplifies how historic preservation can be both a cultural and functional triumph.
