Union Terrace Gardens
Aberdeen City, Scotland
The transformation of Union Terrace Gardens (UTG) demonstrates a thoughtful and forward-thinking approach to inclusive design, ensuring that the space is welcoming and accessible to all members of the community. The project’s success lies in its commitment to balancing accessibility, heritage preservation, and community engagement, resulting in a public space that fosters connection and inclusivity. The design team’s innovative approach seamlessly integrates modern accessibility solutions into the historic fabric of UTG. The thoughtful reconfiguration of steep granite steps into a more manageable incline and the addition of an elegant, wheelchair-friendly pathway that weaves through the gardens exemplify this. The inclusion of terraced seating and an accessible amphitheatre enhances the park’s functionality while respecting its heritage character. The new pavilions, featuring large passenger lifts and accessible toilets, complement the existing infrastructure with their contemporary design and usability. Materials were meticulously selected to support accessibility for diverse users. The smooth resin-bound gravel ensures a comfortable surface for walking and wheeling, while paving mixes mitigate challenges for neurodiverse and visually impaired individuals. The incorporation of seating at various heights, with armrests and backrests, as well as strategically placed rest points, caters to a wide range of needs, promoting usability for all visitors. UTG sets a benchmark for inclusive public spaces. Collaboration with the Disability Equity Partnership and the Bon Accord Access Panel ensured that user needs were prioritised. Features such as lift access from multiple entry points, accessible bridges, and blue-badge parking spaces demonstrate the commitment to removing barriers. The design also enhances safety and comfort through thoughtful lighting strategies and clear wayfinding, making navigation intuitive for all users, including those with visual or cognitive impairments. Play and community spaces designed with input from SEN schools further underscore the project’s dedication to inclusivity. The all-abilities play areas provide opportunities for children with physical and cognitive challenges to engage and connect. Union Terrace Gardens is now a vibrant, welcoming space that fosters community interaction and enjoyment. By combining accessible routes, heritage restoration, and new facilities, the project enhances the city’s cultural and recreational offerings
