Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery
York, Yorkshire & Humberside
The Wonderlab at the National Railway Museum (NRM) is a vibrant, interactive addition that encapsulates the museum's mission to engage and inspire young audiences with science, engineering, and railway history. Situated in a former locomotive repair shed and connected to the NRM's Great Hall, this dynamic space offers a fresh, playful atmosphere that encourages exploration and learning. The design blends seamlessly with the existing fabric of the historic building due to the minimal interventions which retain key elements of the shed's industrial past, such as the rail tracks on the floor and the steel wheel-drop structure, providing a sense of continuity with the building's original purpose. The decision to limit material use has not only enhanced sustainability but also allowed the historical context to shine. The thoughtful incorporation of plywood panelling adds warmth and functionality, serving as storage, seating, and display while preserving the space's industrial charm. The Wonderlab engages its visitors, especially younger audiences, through its interactive exhibits. The space is filled with a diverse range of hands-on activities designed to make science and engineering both fun and educational. The central red inflatable sculpture by Steve Messam and the “Play Revolution” installation by Pippa Hale provide striking visual focal points that further enhance the space's playful atmosphere. The layout is intuitive, with exhibits well dispersed throughout the gallery, allowing for free exploration without a prescribed route. This sense of openness, coupled with the clear visibility across the space, creates an inviting environment where families can spend hours learning and interacting, ensuring that all visitors, regardless of ability, can engage with the exhibits and enjoy the space.
Judges’ Comments:
